why do teens avoid taking the consequences for negative behaviors or getting into trouble?

They are always saying they are being "judged" and wallowing in self pity when faced with the consequences of their own bad behaviors.

Teens don't usually avoid the true consequences of negative behaviours. If they get drunk, they suffer a hangover. If they are reckless, they may get hurt. True life consequences are excellent teachers and motivators, which is why they are an important part of loving discipline (NOT punishment) which should be used right through childhood. If a teen understands natural consequences, then he (or she) knows what he's getting into when he behaves badly, and usually accepts the consequences.

Unfortunately some parents talk about 'consequences' as a euphemism for 'punishment', when it's nothing of the sort. A consequence follows naturally or logically; a punishment is an attempt to be manipulative, or to take revenge. Some misguided parents think that punishments teach something useful - they don't. They just teach bullying and increase aggression.

So if by 'consequences' you really mean 'punishment', teens ARE being judged if parents use these negative methods of raising them. When children are raised in non-coercive punishment-free homes, they dont 'behave negatively as teens unless they're sick or stressed, in which case good parents help them rather than attacking them.
