Can I use a curl bar to bench press?

I'm starting weight lifting this week and I want to know if it's OK to bench with a curl bar.

It would only be for about a week or so before I buy a barbell so I'm just wondering if I can use my curl bar in the meantime?

Update:

Yeah it is an EZ bar.

Do you mean an EZ bar - a short bar with an almost zig zag pattern? If so then it won't do you any harm but it will be awkward and won't be as efficient. Because of the shape of the bar you will have to grip it much closer so you will effectively be doing a close grip press which is designed primarily for your triceps rather than pectorals. I would avoid using heavy weights with this bar as stability will be an issue. You will need to keep an eye on your wrists - if you start to feel discomfort because of the angle then stop.

Well I do close-grip benching with a curl bar....the only problem I would see with a curl bar is the restriction on the width.
