It's like a lot of things. It depends what you want and what you like.

The tomato sauce in Heinz Baked Beans costs more than the beans. Consequently they put in a lot of sauce and charge money. Asda baked beans are cheaper and contain more beans. That is what I want so I choose Asda's over Heinz. The price is just a bonus.

Often the ingredients are very cheap and there is no essential difference between the own brand and the named products. The precise taste depends the exact formulation. It is often just as cheap to make a good formulation as it does to make a poor one. Amongst branded products, Heinz Ploughman's Pickle is made from essentially the same stuff as Branston. The difference is, I love Branston but can't stand Heinz Ploughman. Same quality ingredients so similar cost and similar price. Just a different recipe.

I agree with you. Asda stuff is good. The real question to ask is why the others aren't so good.
