In 1958, 94% of Americans disapproved of interracial marriage. In 1967 it was legalized nationwide...?

96% of Americans polled in 1958 disapproved of interracial marriage:

Their disapproval was based mainly on religious grounds. They thought that, since God separated the races after the Tower of Babel, He intended for them to stay separated (proof? see the ruling by judge Leon Bazile in Loving v Virginia). However, in 9 short years, interracial marriage was legalized nationwide by Loving v Virginia, even though 73% of Americans still opposed it.

Now we have same-sex marriage. It is opposed for the exact same reason (people believe it is against the bible). However, recent polls show that over 50%, of Americans support it.

Yet it seems the Supreme Court is not yet ready to proclaim in unconstitutional, even though they did so with less than 25% public support for interracial marriage.

The question then becomes: why the wait?40 years ago, the Court could care less about the public's moral stance on an issue, and now, even having the support of a majority of Americans isn't enough? What has happened in the last 40 years to give conservative Christians such a death grip on social policy?

your right about the 96% but not about the religious aspect. Most of those 96 percent were severely racist toward the fact of a black man and white woman together. Racism because "it doesn't look right." Now the homosexuality is more based on religion because there is more biblical text on that manner of "behavior" but homosexuality is not a sin, but it is a form of love, and should be acknowledged at stuff.

But i do not like the government setting forth punishments on those that say things because they want to. Even if what they say is racist doesn't matter to me, and none shouldn't be stopped, because that is the basis of Free Speech, having to listen to what you want to hear, and or already know, or hear what you hate and just flat out ignoring it.

Oh yes and alot of Christian groups spend billions of dollars in lobbying to get their "voices" heard.

In 1958 American blacks had been unable to attend white faculties use a quantity of motels, eating places, theaters, retail stores, and an identical organizations. Right now there have been many areas the place segregation was legally allowed, there were beaches, consuming fountains, bus stops exact for blacks and whites.. You might be speakme a couple of time when the Klu Klux Klan had been nonetheless active within the South and lynching was nonetheless employed as a approach of terrorizing the black population. It used to be now not unless 1964 that Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The legislation tried to handle the obstacle of African americans being denied the vote in the Deep South. An instance of the attitudes to integration on the time has been pointed out by using Julia Roberts who's father ran an appearing group where he allowed each black and white kids to attend, Julia was once spat at and verbally abused for mixing with black children. The final perspective amongst most americans to blacks was similiar to those underneath apartheid in South Africa so it's not stunning that almost all were against blended marriages.

You're committing a logical fallacy: the scriptures don't explicitly speak to interracial marriage being "sinful", it was only improperly inferred by erroneous interpretation.

However, the scriptures DO speak to homosexuality as being sinful behavior (Leviticus, Romans, 1 Corinthians, etc).

But it was still between man and woman. See the difference?

I'm not surprised that religion has been losing ground in this country. Oh well it's not unanticipated.
