How to knock out... a beetle?

I've got a jar with a couple of beetles in there. One of the biggest common ground beetles (the black ones under stones, you see them a lot in England) has a white mark on it and it's wing casing is a bit disrupted

So, how do I knock it out so I can inspect it without getting my fingers torn off?

I have some canned air, would the cold refrigerant stuff not kill it?

    The propellent in the can might harm it. How about putting it in the fridge, that should slow it down at least but it's not cold enough to kill it.
