Repairing a bicycle shifter? Please read?
My bicycle rear shifter is out. How do I know if it just needs a new cable or if it needs a whole new shifting unit?
It is a shimano shifter on a Nishiki Mountain bike if that makes a difference.

If you cannot tell then you need to have a bike mechanic diagnose it.

Pick the cable in an area where it is exposed and pull hard on it. If the cable is broken or loose it will come out of the housing.
