Places I've been in order of awesomeness in China:
1. Guilin / Yangshuo : My #1 must see. Take the river cruise and see the iconic mountains featured on the 20 yuan note, catch cormorant fishing and some bamboo rafting. Also while nearby get a tour to the rice terraces and local minority villages.
2. Chengdu: Leshan Buddha and Giant Panda Research facility.
3. Beijing: (Sights ranked in order of awesomeness) Summer Palace > Great Wall > Temple of Heaven > Forbidden City
4. Shanghai: Mostly just the hangout spot for expats sick of being in China, but I think the Bund area is a fun place to visit.
