a)
Its like this.
On the first day of you period, the brain releases a hormone called FSH(Follicle Stimulatin Hormone) which triggers follicles to grow to a very lengthy size, say 15 mm. When a follicle has reached its maximum length, the LH(Lutenizing Hormone) is released to trigger the release of the egg from the ovary, which is called ovulation, near the middle of the month or 14th day of your 28 day cycle.

You usually ovulate 14 days before your next period for example if you have 28 day cycles you would count backwards 14 days from when you would next get your period, you don't always ovulate dead on that exact date so it's best advised to have intercourse 5 days before expected ovulation and 3 days after just to cover yourself ... Hope this helps !!

if the male part of your body (the sperm) fertilizes the egg then a baby develops and the egg is what causes your period to start
