to my new computer. Do I need to buy a new printer or is there something I can do to make it compatible.

You can go to HP printer support look up your model and download the newest and compatible software and drive for the operating system of your new computer.

Not knowing anything about the printer in question, then I suppose you will need a new printer. Name and model always helps when seeking assistance here
