3 year olds doing puzzles?
My son has just turned 3. He loves puzzles and has always been a fan of them. I thought most children his age could do puzzles, but noticed the other children at nursery struggling to put any logic to the puzzle, which really annoyed him, lol!
He can easily put together a 35 piece puzzle in around 3 or 4 minutes. Maybe a little longer if its new. Hes moved onto 100 piece puzzles now. They do take a little longer, say 30 mins or so. He doesnt use trial and error much anymore, he tends to look at the puzzle, then work out what he needs to fill the gaps, then look for the right piece.
Is this more advanced than I should expect, or were the other children just having an off day?

That's impressive for a 3 year old!
My daughter is 4 and a half and struggles alot with puzzles.
I would say that's advanced, I've seen the kids in my daughters nursery not be able to do them either.

It sounds to me that your son has very good spacial abilities and very good hand and eye coordination! Simple puzzles apparently bore him... so let him work on more difficult puzzles that will challenge him. And of course encourage him...
Should he become discouraged or frustrated... let him take a break & go back to the puzzle after a little while.
I wouldn't compare him to other children... he's his own little person and sounds very bright for such a young age! Solving puzzles shows that he'll be a good problem solver as me grows up.
Wishing you all the best! My little one is now 21 and getting ready to graduate from college. She was in the TAG program (Talented & Gifted) in our school system. Encourage your sons abilities and stand back and be amazed!

Some kids are just smarter than others! Your son sounds like he will be gifted (or talented) in the future. :)

That's so good! You have a little bright kid their!
Let him do that! Challenge him, if he enjoys doing it then why not?
