A certain sum of money maintains a family of 18 men for 15 days when the price of sugar is 10lbs/cent. If the price is decreased so that the sugar now costs 14lbs/cent. How many days will the sugar last if the men are 6 and the amount to be spent remains same...

    Answer: It will last for 63 days.

    Solution:

    i) When the number of men becomes 6 and @ same consumption,

    the sugar will last for (18 * 15)/6 = 45 days.

    ii) As the price reduced, increase in quantity for the same amount is 14/10 = 7/5

    iii) So number of days = 45*(7/5) = 63 days

    I'm guessing that you had a typo when you wrote the price decreased from 10lbs/cent to 14lbs/cents because I've never heard of that sort of ratio. However, it's not that far-fetched so I will follow through nonetheless.

    Anyway, lets assume you had 100 dollars. So, with that 100 dollars, you could have bought 100,000lbs of sugar, which subsequently "fed" 18 men for 15 days. So that means with that price, you could feed 18 men 140,000 lbs of sugar for 21 days.

    With the same money, $100, and with the new price of 14lbs/cent, you could have gotten 140,000lbs of sugar which would feed 6 men in x days.

    Notice the last two statements are the same save the amount of men. The latter one has a third of the former's amount of men, so, assuming the ratio of sugar eaten by each man stays the same, the days fed for the latter would be triple the former's days.

    So your final answer would be 63.

    18 X 15 = 270 man days

    6 men it will last 270/6 = 45 days

    at 10 lbs / cent = 45 days

    at 14lbs / cent = 45 X 14/10 = 63 days ANSWER
