TSA rules and cigarette lighters?

Question

I haven’t flown in a while, and I’m leaving the country (USA). Are cigarette lighters OK in my purse or carry-on now? Do they have to go in my checked bag? If I can, I will put 1 or 2 in each place, just so they don’t get lost. TSA rules say nothing about them at all, anymore. Am I safe to assume you can carry them in your purse or pocket now?

They are just Bics. The reason I need more than one is that I’m a big smoker and I’ll be gone for almost a month.

last time I flew, I was a smoker, and I had no problem with carrying a small lighter inside my cigarette pack inside my purse. when you go through security, just kindly mention and show them that you have these things, as a courtesy (or, if heaven forbid the rules have changed in the last yr, you never know!) have a safe trip:)

The TSA officially lifted the ban of cigarette lighters on planes on August 3, 2007.

The TSA rules are actually quite clear:

Regular BIC or Zippo type lighters <<are>> allowed in carry on baggage. Lighters are <<strictly>> forbidden in your checked in luggage - WITH the following exceptions: lighters that do not have any fuel in them, or up to 2 fueled lighters that are inside special DOT approved fireproof carrying cases.

Torch lighters are NEVER allowed in any baggage. Period.

Think about a lighter in checked luggage.... Would you want an device whose only purpose is to create a flame in the middle of tons of flammable material? I hope not. Do not put any lighter in a checked in bag.

So, just leave the lighter in your purse or carry on bag, and there will not be a problem. Since you will be there when they screen your purse or bag, the lighters will not "get lost" so you only need to bring one.
