I want to learn Arabic for curiosity and I like the calligraphy. I would like to be able to understand Arabic news, telly and internet to get a balanced view of world events. I like reading about different religions, not to convert but for general knowledge and understanding. Currently, I am curious about Sufis.

I'm an Arabic girl, from Egypt. I may learn you some easy words, like (إزيك) Ezayek means (How are u? or How r u doing?), (خلاص) Khalas means (Finished, or I've stopped or final resort), (ماء أو مياة ) Mayia or Maa' means (Water), (جعان، أو جوعان) Gaa'an with ع means (Hungry). Most of Arabs people have different Accent speech than El Foshaa (Quranic Language). As in my country can say Ezayak, in other Arab country might say Eish Lonak, each has his own expression. But they say about Egyptians than they're the nearest to Foshaa (Quraanic Language), and the easiest to learn. So, if you're going to learn Arabic, learn it from Egyptians, or someone can talk like ones. They (Arab) has said about Egyptians (إحكى إحكى يا مصرى) meaning Talk Talk Egyptian, as he tells jokes, funny situations, and good Arabic Language. All Arabs Understand what Egyptian may say, but no one of them can interpret what Saudi, Lebanon, Somalian, Sudan, or Kuwait may say, each has his different expression and meaning to something than the other except Egyptians as they have the same meaning for things as it is. Like it may vary for Milk, Yogurt, Tomato, Pepper and others.

I don't find street Arabic very pleasing to hear, crude to be honest. I find Quranic Arabic however beautiful. The heart recognizes the words of God. I have heard of non-muslims crying when they the Quran recited even though they don't understand a word of it.

These days you can learn how to speak Arabic over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Arabic online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/arabic The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Arabic in just 3 months.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Arabic language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.

No. I found it useful to learn to speak French, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish fluently -- for business reasons. I learned to speak Tagalog fluently because my wife is Filipino. I never had a reason to learn Arabic.
