How often is it safe to wash out your eyes?

So I got dish soap in my eyes yesterday after the bottle top got plugged and exploded in my face. I have an eye wash (little eye shaped cup you put water in) and it worked well. I was wondering how often it's safe or effective to wash your eyes out with water like this. My guess is that it can do harm because our eyes are extra sensitive and putting chlorine laden municipal water in them is bad...but i've heard of some people getting allerergy relief from doing it. I usually use Opcon A drops but i'm not sure how good that is for your eyes either

Water can make your eyes dryer, so can cause irritation and some burning feeling.

Water can also have bacteria in it.

Of course if you have soap in your eyes then you need to dilute it as quickly as possible. So I would only use water in an emergency like having something in my eye.

Eye drops or a solution that is meant for the eyes if much better for the eyes then water.

Our own tear film is the best thing as it will help the eye fight infections and also feed the cornea.
