Is it better to take the ACT with the writing portion?

I know, I'm a bit late. Already out of high school and asking these questions. Doesn't really make a difference, though. Going to a community college for two years before I go to a university, so whatevs.

I am given two options on the ACT site. One of the options is to pay $36.50 to take the ACT without writing.

The second option is to pay $52.50 to add the writing.

Does it really make a difference which one I do? Has anyone ever gotten into school easier by taking the writing portion?

It depends on the type of collage you want to go to and the job you want. If your going to a community collage, they generally don't look at the writing part. If your going somewhere big like Duke or something they look at the it. It also depends on your major. If your going into something like journalism or anything where writing is crucial, you need the writing part. Hope I helped!

  • I can't go by much except the two tests I took. The first test had a written portion; to get full marks you had to write only in the paragraphed, "standardized" way. Me being me, I got a C on that and it brought the rest of my test score down to a 24.

Took it a second time, without the standardized written part and did much better with a 26. Plus in your case, the price is cheaper. I'd say unless you're confident you know how to write things the way THEY want you to write, go without it.
