Food safety questions?

So many people post questions about "I left this out on the counter/in a pot on the stove/in my car".

I'm sincerely curious, how exactly does that happen? I've had Salmonella poisoning, it's something I truly want to avoid. Not to mention the price of food!

Short of an emergency, I can't imagine getting takeout or cooking something and forgetting to put it away.

Share your opinion.

Update:

Yeah, I want to know how you forget about good food you paid good money for! Do you just have that busy a life, don't ever go in the kitchen, just that absent minded, how? The only time I remember doing this, someone else was supposed to put it away and didn't, after I had gone to bed.

THANK YOU! I wonder about this when I see those questions too. Are they rich enough to waste food, dumb, lazy, don't clean the kitchen counters, drunk, ignorant about food safety, what?? OK, I've ranted enough.

You mean you want to know how people left food out in the first place? Well, people forget to do things sometimes. That's all it is, mostly. I'm sure you forget to do things once in a while. They get busy doing something else and forget. Since you have had salmonella, you're probably much more conscious of avoiding risky food situations than most people, so you are more likely to remember to put food away.
