Really stupid (but awesome) solution for our debt crisis...?

This is obviously just a thought experiment, not an actual suggestion. However, it does provide a solution to the debt crisis other than "let our kids pay for it"

First, we print 17 $1 trillion bills. Debt is now paid off.

However, this will obviously have a drastic negative effect on our economy, so we have a caveat: they only get printed if and when an amendment is ratified which requires us to have a balanced budget every year (no more deficits)

Obviously it isn't the best solution, but there isn't really a good solution. But this way, we actually accept the consequences of our own debt instead of passing it off to our children. Let's pass it!

    I have a better idea...

Arrest all of our politicians, seized all their assets and money, then pay off our debts using that...

Not all our debts come in TRILLION dollar denominations. We're gonna need to make change for those bills to actually pay off the debt.

And actually, what we really need is to just stop going into more debt every year. If we could do that, we can easily pay the interest on the debt every year and just roll over the debt as it comes due. That interest on the current debt is only about $320 Billion each year, out of an annual budget of $3.8 Trillion.

So the real solution is that Balanced Budget Amendment you referred to. Eventually, as the economy continues to grow, those interest payments will become even more trivial as tax receipts go up, but interest payments remain the same.

Being that our dollars are not backed by anything of value other than the GNP (our belief that Americans will continue to produce and make money) we really have nowhere to go but down, anyway.

Add that to the problem that criminals in other countries continue to counterfeit massive amounts of American dollars, in spite of efforts to make that more difficult.

The more dollars in circulation, the less they are worth.

If we pass the amendment why do we need to print the bills?

    Why not just be responsible?

I agree it is really stupid and what I would expect out of my second grader as far as ideas go.
