Bike has chronic chain rub issues?

I've taken my bike to the shop to get my front derailleur tuned three times and at this point I am getting embarrassed about going back for the same problem so many times. After they fix it, the chain rub problem comes back in about one or two days. Now, I only switch between 3 gears and I try to keep my chain line straight. (I think maybe because I ride off ledges and run over potholes at high speeds sometimes that may cause my derailleur to slip.) So my question is, why does my derailleur keep 'de-tuning' itself, and what can I do to prevent it from rubbing the chain in the future?

I would first check the chain rings and make sure they run true. If they wobble back and forth as they turn that could be the problem.

With the chain on the smallest front and largest rear. The chain should just clear the derailleur on the inside.

With the chain on the largest front and smallest rear the chain should just clear the outside of the derailleur.

When using the center front chain ring you should be able to use and gear in the back.

Use only 1-3 on the back with the smallest front and the 3 highest with the largest front.

Well, I can just about bet that you have a Shimano drivetrain. Am I correct?

If so, you will be shocked to know that Shimano knows about it, and has known about it for a decade or more. The problem gets progressively worse as you go to their lower grade of components. What is their "fix"?

They say that you either have to live with it or choose a different gear that doesn't make the noise. Yet another reason I prefer SRAM. By the way, if your drivetrain is a Shimano "compatible" (Falcon or others) it is even worse. The problem will also occur on "mass market" bottom of the barrel SRAM stuff.

I am assuming (you'll have to ask your mechanic) that they verified the chain line (especially if they replaced a bottom bracket in your bike) and made sure the derailleur is in the correct position- they are almost never correct when the bike comes out of the box.
