My dog is afraid of fireworks to the point where he won't even go outside anymore?

My dog used to love to walk, so we would walk during the day. For the past month, people have been shooting off fireworks, sometimes when we were outside walking or I was taking him to potty. It has gotten to the point he won't even go outside to walk or potty. I have to pick him up carry him outside so he'll potty. I've been trying to give him treats like I did when he was a puppy when he walks toward the front door, but when I get him outside someone will shoot a firework and he pulls on the leash toward the front door. He's 2 yrs old.

Update:

I got him a thundershirt to wear inside the house, but it hasn't helped much. Went to the vet and they gave me Amitriptyline, which has helped when is inside, but he is still terrified to go outside.

Update 2:

Should I be carrying him outside to potty or should I just wait until he garners up the courage to go outside? I'm just getting worried even without people shooting fireworks after awhile that he still won't go outside at all.

This is totally natural for most pets. They don't understand fireworks and they scare them, same as the sound of a thunderstorm scares most pets. Just give your dog a LOT of extra petting and love during this time, especially when he hears the sound of fireworks - and just be patient. After a few days with not hearing fireworks, and doing what you've always done, he should be back to normal.

Do a search for t-touch wraps. It involves using an ace bandage in a figure 8 around the dogs body to help reduce stress. It helps a lot with stress. Hopefully the noise won't last much longer, maybe another week.

Been dealing with this for the past month also.. Get a thundershirt for the dog or ask a vet for mild anti anxiety medication.

I don't know what your question is, but my dogs are scared too. I would keep him inside. Maybe lay some potty training pads on the floor? Sorry about that!

He's weak nerved and this will never go away. He'll be like this for life. There's nothing you can do.
