NBA: Do you think the Lakers will amnesty World Peace now?

Obviously with Dwight gone Pau will not be moved unless a better option presents itself. Do you think the Lakers will amnesty World Peace to allow more flexibility and move on semi-rebuild mode?

Yes I think they will. Why? Although he is a valuable asset on an expiring contract, letting MWP go would put the Lakers slightly under the luxury tax threshold which is at 71.6 million. That means they get their mid level exception back and can use it to get another player. I doubt they use the MLE though as their 2014 plan would foil if they did.

The luxury tax means for every dollar they spend, they have to pay 1.75 tax for every dollar. That's a lot of money (1.75 because they are 5-10 million over the luxury tax).

I think they sign small contracts either vets minimum or can be longer just smaller so they can still offer max in 2014 to LeBron, Melo, Bosh, Paul George, John Wall etc.

  • No, just dumb to amnesty him now that Dwight's gone and he only has one year left on his contract. Lakers just need to do the best they can this year (they still have Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, and Pau Gasol, they're not a bad team) and wait until the summer of 2014 where they can sign free agents.

No, because he is in the final year of his deal and will not affect the Lakers 2014 offseason plans. Lakers probably aren't going to sign any long term contracts this offseason. And rightfully so.
