    Hong Kong is a city (Island) it belongs to China and always has. During the 99 year lease to the United Kingdom (expired in 1997) it was governed by and under the rule of the British .

    Hong Kong is technically a British colony in China, until it gained its independence. Upon gaining independence, it became a country, despite being only a city.
