How do I catch this guy and get my money back?
My mum bought me and herself an iphone 4s, one black and one white- both 32gb on gumtree. we bought them off of a guy called matthew shaun for $600 who scammed us- we transferred the money to his bank account and then we never saw the phones... we have tried ringing him but he must have his phone off or changed his sim. How do my mum and I catch this guy and get our money back because that was all my savings :( he left us his name, bank details (bsb and account no#) and his phone number (which does not ring). we also have some text messages if that helps.
thank you all for your answers... :)

You file a police report if you have his bank account details and copies of all emails
This is why Gumtree warns users to ONLY deal with face to face CASH transactions or you are always going to get scammed

You don't, just take this as a lesson to be careful what you purchase off the internet. Depending on how long ago this was, the person is probably long gone by now. You could look up his name or hire a private detective but the police won't bother with anything under $1,000 usually. Then again, that name he gave you is probably as phony as his scam.

Mark it up to experience. I have said this before - it is asking for trouble to buy off Gumtree, Craigslist, etc without taking great care. If you are buying goods then meet the seller, see the goods, check them out and make sure they are right, not stolen, and what you want. Then and only then part with money.
Better yet, stick to Ebay. Proper buyer protection there.
