How to Start a Rabbitry?

Ok so im going to start breeding dwarf hotot rabbits. I want to know what the most important things are to know. I've been breeding mix breeds for 4 years now and yes they all went to very good homes. I'm suppose to be getting a non-pedigreed female that will be breed back with the buck before I get her.

*What should the prices be?

*How do I start my own pedigree?

*Is it ok to have them in regular cages?

*What is the legal age to sell rabbits at?

    1. Depends on the local market. If they are not show rabbits breeding the best genetically healthy animals, there is zero point in breeding. Every animal needs to EARN the right to breed, if they are not the best of the best they should not be reproduced.

    2. See above. You go to a show, you meet established breeders and you bargain.

    3. No. This is my biggest bugbear. "Breeders" and show people keep their rabbits in tiny boxes. People who actually CARE about their rabbits keep them like this:

That would result in happy, healthy, well-muscled rabbits. Rather than miserable rabbits with muscle wastage and temperament and gut problems kept in tiny boxes. No less than 40 square foot at all times. Most rabbit rescues won't rehome to less than 60-100 square foot and yet breeders are happy to recommend just 4-6 square foot. Where is the sense in that? Clearly show breeders only care what their rabbits look like and NOT their mental health and wellbeing. [/rant end]

    4. In an ideal world no breeder would sell a rabbit under 4-6 MONTHS old after they have been spayed/neutered to avoid unwanted BYB breeding of sold on kits. In reality they are sold at no less than 8-12 weeks.

If the rabbits babies are pure bred I would sell them for around 10-15 $ if crossbreed I would sell them for 1-5 dollars.

any breeder can make an official pedigree for the babies they produce. If both parents are pedigreed, you have all the information you need to make a pedigree for the babies. There are several ways to produce a pedigree. You can order pedigree blanks from some cage suppliers. If you’re good with the computer, you can produce your own using Microsoft Word or a similar program. You can Google “custom rabbit pedigree designs” to find companies that offer this service. Or you can buy rabbitry management software such as The Easy Rabbit Pedigree Generator.

It's ok to have them in regular cages. U have to have one foot of cage per pound of rabbit + an extra foot. If your rabbit is pregnant and is going to have babies you should add 3 extra feet to the total size of the cage. (Eg) you have a pregnant rabbit of 3 pounds the cage should be 7 feet long and 18 in high

I sell my rabbits at about 10 weeks old, u shouldn't sell a rabbit younger than 8 weeks old.

    Hope this helps :)
