Should Youtube remove the secretly recorded secret mormon temple ceremony?

Bit ironic that, isn't it- secretly recorded the secret ceremony.

Last year, some Mormon (who obviously doesn't believe in the religion anymore) entered a endowment ceremony inside a temple and secretly recorded the entire thing. Now, the ceremony has been uploaded onto Youtube so any bugger in the world can watch it.

Should Youtube remove this video? Does it violate freedom of privacy, or whatever?

I'm not a mormon by any means, butr I know the mormons consider this ceremony to be very sacred, and very secretive.

I imagine they must be fuming over this.

it was filmed against the people's knowledge and on private property...so yea, there is prolly some type of legal recourse...

but for the LDS...we do consider the ceremony to be SACRED - not secret. so I'm not going to violate MY own faith by posting it, but if somebody else wants to do that - whatever. it's in extremely poor taste but it's not my poor taste - they make that choice. before youtube it was written up in books, recorded on tape, re-enacted (badly) and filmed....somebody is always willing to ridicule and mock someone else and their beliefs.

BTW - did it occur to you that you are only increasing his viewing status by posting the link....I mean if you really do find it offensive.

edit: OHS - God allowing an individual to show his/her choice is NOT failure of the HS.

These Mormons are full of it....trying to compare others to swine, when they are the porkers treading on the Word of God and exalting Joseph Smith who was a pedophile! The bloody oaths' penalties were modified because the secret was out, the nasty promises had been exposed, and the cult took a poll of their faithful and learned they didn't like the blood thirstiness!

Those that will watch this video will find it weird and think that Mormons are a strange group. This will happen because they haven't been taught the meaning and the symbolism of the ceremony. It really doesn't bother me since the ceremony has been a part of the Library of Congress for years. NOt secret...sacred, there is a HUGE difference.

Hmmm, guess the "still small voice" failed on a couple of levels here...

    1) Failed to warn the Bishop who performed the first interview of the person to give them a recommend into the temple, since the person obviously doesn't believe and was planning something "bad".

    2) Failed to warn the Stake President who performed the second interview of the person to give them a recommend into the temple.

    3) Failed to let the temple workers know about the secret filming so they could stop it.

    4) Failed to let any of the other temple patrons that day know that something "bad" was happening right next to them.

Curious that the Holy Ghost would fail so many times to warn God's people who hold God's authority, about something so important to God... almost as if He doesn't really care too much about what people do in the Mormon temples...or who sees it. I wonder if God really feels mocked when people make fun of the secret passwords and handshakes, or if He just rolls His eyes at it all.

Even people who have been taught the "symbolism" and "meanings" of the temple endowment can still find the whole thing extremely weird and jarring compared to the rest of Mormonism and especially compared to the simple, non-secretive church that Christ established anciently.

EDIT: Phrog, I didn't realize you were the authority on what the Holy Ghost should and shouldn't do... If the Holy Ghost can help a person find a missing cell phone...then isn't it possible that it should also help a person notice that someone is secretly filming the endowment session right next to them?

  • Yes, it does bother me that someone would do this and it bothers me that it is online for public viewing, but it really does mean little outside of the temple and without the accompaniment of the Holy Spirit.

So, if you think it's a blast, go ahead and watch it and I'll go watch Gone With the Wind for--let's see--the 500th time. Have fun.

No. It's freedom of speech. If YT took this down, all religions would have prescendent to demand videos that offend them to be taken down. Users like Darkmatter could be targeted.

It is really no skin off my nose. I do not watch the ceremony on the internet because for me, it is reserved for the temple. It is too bad that there are those with so little integrity that they can break promises like this. I would steer away from them.

God said to not cast your pearls before swine because they would trample them under their feet and then turn again and rend you. Kind of like what happens on this site (i.e. temple ordinances are foolish and so are Mormons).

Christ said that "the things of God are foolishness to man because they (the things of God) are spiritually discerned". This is why temple ordinances are not meant for those who are not spiritually prepared. For those who are, the ordinances are powerful, life changing experiences designed to bring us into the presence of God.

I am familiar with religious history in the bible as well as the Book of Mormon and I am quite certain that in the end, God will not be mocked. This is his work, not mine.

    Nope.

And no, it doesn't violate any privacy; as editorial reporting, it's fair game. The church let the guy in, which means he has the right to report on what he saw and did (including reporting via video).

The text of the ever-changing ritual was already widely available on-line. It hasn't been a "secret" for a long time now. But yeah, they're probably still fuming...there's evidence that in the early days of the church, anyone who told outsiders about the temple ritual -- one of Brigham Young's "unforgivable sins," was subject to "blood atonement."

edit: "rrosskop" doesn't know what he's talking about. You can't copyright a ceremony, and editorial reportage falls under "fair use" of copyrighted material anyway.
