What is meant by "I road the rods"?

I was listening to The Falcon "Vanishing Varmint" from 7/11/1951 and one of the gangsters said, "I road the rods". What does that mean?

I rode the rod's not road. Under old box cars were rods. You could sling and secure a tarp on them and ride under the car in a hammock. Many tried a blanket that if gave way you ended up under the wheels dead in many pieces. So I came into town on the bum, quit and not on a bus. Out of site transportation. By boxcar or under one or such. It is a term from the Great Depression. I had to ride the rods as no boxcar was open. The sheriff wanted me for stealing a pie from a window. The pie was sweet but the law is bitter. The fine was a dollar but I ain't got a dime. And I did not want to stay for no time. Or something like that.

Hello, I don't know how else to ask you a direct question, so I posted here. I need some help with filling out my W4 form... I am a single mother of three teens, and my child support is a joke of $400/month for all three, and it's always in arrears because he doesn't work. I need to know how many allowances I should put down on my W4 in order to receive a little money come tax refund time, or come out even. I am trying to avoid federal debt, as this would get me into a pickle. I currently make $48,000.00 annually. Thank you, your help is much appreciated...
