If an instructor teaches a bad martial art can they still be a good instructor?
I want an opinion here, people say the teacher matters more than the style...can somebody be teaching people that they can use energy waves in a fight and still be considered a 'good teacher'?
People say it's the teacher, not the style. Can somebody who teaches a bad style still be a good teacher?
I'm not a debunker - that guy has been debunked already.
My question is can you still be a good teacher if you're teaching rubbish. Can a good teacher make legitimacy where there is none or does the fact that there is no legitimacy immediately render them a bad teacher?
I've actually never heard of Seiyu Oyata before now and I'm not against traditional styles either Darth. You know I used to do one and still hold great affection for it.
@Shienaran.
You just rubbished 90% of public school teachers, nicely done.

If he really is a good instructor, he wouldn't be caught dead teaching a bad art.The difference between a good instructor and a bad one is not just in the method of instruction, but in the choice of material that he chooses to teach. The first universal principle of teaching is the concept of teaching the student what is right and wrong, all instructions no matter in what field of endeavor, always follows this first principle. That there is a right way of doing things and a wrong way of doing things. If a teacher himself cannot tell what is right and wrong, then what right has he to teach others about what is right and wrong? So if the art is really that bad and he doesn't even know it, then he's not an instructor I'd care to learn from. That's just my opinion.

You "debunkers" keep bringing up George Dillman as the representative of all that is bad about the art.
We bring up the late, great Master Seiyu Oyata and none of you say a word.
Dillman went off the handle with his "no touch" stuff but I can tell you this - if you attacked him, you would learn real fast that he really does know how to apply his karate. Not only on his students but on "resisting" opponents.
All you have is Dillman, the human stun-idiot, and the kiai idiot.
I can point you towards some practitioners that will have you coming back here to give your testimony.
The problem is that the REAL people do not waste time on the uninformed.

Using energy waves is not a style. When we say it's the teacher not the style, we mean true time tested styles.
A martial art is something that can be used for self defense or warfare. If it cannot be used it is not a martial art.
Traditional martial arts can and have been used in all of those.

Dillman is a good martial artist. He can be a good teacher of the martial arts.
But the no touch garbage is not a style. It is snake oil.
Edit:
I'll elaborate a little.
I'll stay with Dillman since he is your subject. He is a high ranking martial artist in a traditional art. He may be very good at teaching that art.
But he is also good at deception in selling that no touch garbage. I consider him a fraud. But that does not take away from his ability to teach real martial arts. I wouldn't send my child to him nor would I train under him. But if he was having a seminar and is teaching on self defense applications. I might consider attending. If he begin talking about the no touch knock out, I'll volunteer to be knocked out. I'll volunteer to be on the other side of the sheet while he "moves" me. I'll have my own conditions too. I don't want any of his cronies hurrying up and grabbing me trying to revive me before I fall if he touches me... LOL I won't fall without being touched.

What constitutes a bad style is a matter of opinion. A teacher that is knowledgeable and motivates his/her students is a good teacher.
