Without knowing any respective ages, it's impossible to know their levels of maturity or anything about their relationships, or if in fact any have physically, intimately, sexually engaged with same gender.
They do seem young, and you sound like a decent, very accepting parents, pat on the back for that.
If they are in fact young, still unsettled in their sexuality, they may not have reached a point yet of understanding (if in fact they are truly gay) that it isn't/wasn't their fault. I've been a gay female since conception and I'm settled into it, content with it, with a life mate and two adopted daughters. We are both well educated, decent people, not trying to convert the world to our sexual preference, not flaunting it either, don't follow religious dogma about what sinners we are, don't use sex as the main focus of a relationship, enjoy the same interests and activities as straight humans do.
I think your example, while the question is a broad generalization, is in a closer circle/group of people.

The homosexual populace have a tendency to be uncomfortable with themselves due to the rest of the world. Humans are prententious, suspicious and abusive, to name a few quirks, and being scared of being judged, they- we- turn away. We don't sing out and be proud about who we are because we worry about what everybody else thinks.
