Do half of Americans not like Obamacare because of the product or was the sales job weak.?

Conservatives should be all for Obamacare---it employs two things they love: private enterprise and self reliance.

Liberals should hate Obamacare because it is not single payer (Medicare for all)

I think those who passed the bill did a horrible job of selling it. The product is good-----it eliminates discrimination of the already sick. and eliminates free loading moochers who pay nothing and get medical services for nothing.

It's mostly the sales job IMO. The Republicans did a really good job of demonizing the name "Obamacare" and getting people to think that it's something terrible, without really getting into why it's terrible (except for some canards like "its a big government takeover" of health care).

Conversely, the Democrats have done a really poor job of selling Obamacare. You can see that on this site where there's still a lot of questions from people who seem to think that Obamacare is a government sponsored health insurance program that people might either have the opportunity to get onto or be forced to go onto.

Polling IIRC continues to show that "Obamacare" is unpopular. But one of the curious things is that polling also shows that almost all of the features of Obamacare are popular. Letting kids stay on their parent's insruance till age 26? Eliminating the ban on pre-exisitng conditions? Banning yearly coverage caps? Closing the Medicare "donut hole"? These are all popular provisions, some of them WILDLY popular with approval ratings in the 80s or 90s. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the only measures which are unpopular are the ones where the bill comes due. People, by a slim margin, don't like the individual mandate or the tax on medical device makers. But, and this is also interesting, when pollsters explain that the individual mandate is needed to pay for the popular provisions of the law then a majority, albeit a small majority, support it.

This all suggests to me that the problem isn't the opposition to Obamacare isn't due to the merits but rather the sale job. At least so far. Maybe people will hate Obamacare once it comes into practice and they get a better idea of what it entails

I agree with your comments. The answer is ignorance. Some people have pre-conceived ideas about a socialized plan. They know some basic facts but have their own prejudices against it. They dont even know that the plan went into effect in 2010 and that the insurance mandate is but one provision for 2014. Even with a user friendly website that I always post here, they are too lazy to find out and would rather rely on affirmation of what they believe. They misunderstood Nancy Pelosi's comment, they dont connect with Pres Obama's complex mind, the young people dont want to shell out money for insurance yet they expect others to pay for their emergency care.

I thought most Americans were mixed so isn't this question hypocritical?
