How serious is a chimney crack of 2-3 feet long up inside the fireplace?

And how much might it cost to fix? (If it needs fixing)

There is a run away situation called a chimney fire, in which collected residues from burning pine wood, for example, catch fire and the chimney goes like Mount Vesuvius for a few minutes, till it burns out. The crack can allow some of that to get into your attic.

Then there is the question of what caused the crack. Look closely at where the chimney comes through the roof and make sure it is not taking on water, or falling away from the house.

Source(s): Been there and done that too.

its very serious and expensive..a crack in the fireplace can make it less stable, it can leak carbon monoxide into the house and when it rains, it can let moisture into the house
