Why do celebrities join and leave the Church of Scientology?

The church is highly evangelical. It proselytizes like crazy. They are interested in getting any new members, any time. But they particularly like to have celebs and other opinion leaders join. For one thing, the advanced services offered there are very expensive. Celebs have that kind of money. For another, they use it (relentlessly) as PR.

So that's why they get recruited.

So why does anyone respond? Well, the courses and counselling are interesting and can be fun. It's more or less about self actualization. And that's all fine until they start the cultic crap and treating people badly- which they always do.
