Why does pitching dominate the All-Star game?
During the past 30 years the winner of the All-Star game has scored 5 or fewer runs 17 times and the losing team has scored 3 or fewer runs 21 times. Why do All-Star hitters seem to have so much trouble scoring runs against All-Star pitchers?

I think from a pitching perspective it's like having a teams ace starting the game and each inning or two a fresh ace appears to pick up with the other ace left off. It's all about always having a fresh arm throwing for 9 innings. That's a very large advantage against any lineup.

Because good pitching beats good hitting. That's why pitching generally dominates the postseason as well. The Giants won two out of the last three World Series despite having one of the worst hitting teams in MLB, because they had the best starting rotation and best bullpen (even if they fell apart this year). Good hitters feast on bad pitching, which is where the majority of their stats are earned. It's a rare hitter though, that can consistently hit well off of a great pitcher. So in the All-Star game when the majority of the pitchers in the game are the best in baseball...hitters are going to suffer.
Which makes it all the more special when a guy comes along that can beat the best pitchers in the game and absolutely rake the ball.
