What breed of dog's make a good guard dog but isn't overly high on energy?

My house was burgled a few days ago and a few friends suggested that I should get a dog. I have wanted a dog for a while anyway, so I have been searching up good guard dogs but I can only find dogs with high energy. I can easily walk a dog everyday but I won't have the time to play with a dog for hours. I have a garden if that helps. can anyone help?

Only get the dog that you can handle. Never buy a dog just because you were burgled. Most of the large guarding breeds need experienced owners and also owners that are going to put in a lot of time and effort training and continually training forever.

If you come across the rottweiler and are interested then read this first.

    It couldn't be more accurate.

You would need to get a dog from rescue because a pup will take a year to grow up to even look big. And a rescue isn't going to give you a dog unless all other circumstances are right. You could just go and get a dog off of an internet site, but as people find out, the owners don't always tell the truth and people are left with problem dogs that they can't handle so be careful

The English Mastiff would be my recommendation. Most English Mastiffs are super-low energy. They are also very protective and extremely intimidating. If having a gargantuan dog isn't your thing, then you might want to consider a Chow Chow or an Akita. In my opinion, those are the two breeds which have the strongest natural territorial guarding instincts. They are also both relatively low energy, especially the Chow Chow. However, both are also extremely difficult to train and handle, in addition to being extreme shedders.

On a side note, don't believe anyone who says that Pit Bulls are low energy. They are the exact opposite.

Jeffrey is right about mastiffs and Annabelle, I love Beaucerons but I thought they are high energy?

To the asker. Have you heard of a Cane Corso? They are very protective of family but since it is very loyal and powerful you must know what you are doing. I honestly believe that any well trained and well loved dog will protect the family. I have a 40 lb Heeler that would do anything for me, he has gone after people who hit me but due to his size if the human wanted to hurt him he is a kickable size.

Get an adult great dane that has been trained. Puppies are puppies. A guard dog could sleep in the yard and someone can still break in. You want something in the house that is smart and big and intimidating. Get a great dane. I don't think dogs are good for guarding they are good intimidation tools.

But great danes were raised for that.

A pit bull would be nice. If you train them well they are not vicious but are very protective of you. If the burglars see the pit bull most people will assume it is vicious. They are not vicious at ALL!! If you adopt a calm adult one from a shelter, you are saving more dogs that are being put down, saving that dog, and you are saving your own house. I would not recommend a puppy because they are very energetic.

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes. Some Rottweilers aren't high energy, get one from a breeder who knows what traits the pup will have (:
