need some help on shopping, clothes and shoe ideas?

So, I'm beginning grad school and realize I probably shouldn't wear my t-shirts, hoodies, and athletic shoes with my jeans anymore. This is problematic because that is my comfort zone in a major kind of way. I become so self-conscious wearing more dressy clothes. I know, I know...I shouldn't care what other people think, but it's a genetic temperamental shyness. So my question is what are some good ideas for being more professional/dressy without leaving my comfort zone hard core? Also what are some good stores that are not expensive and are easy to locate in most sizable towns? Additional info: I'm in my early 20's and am tall and slender. Pictures of ideas would be a bonus! Thank you!

You can slowly transition into business casual by wearing button down shirts and jeans or khakis. Or you could wear a polo shirt with khakis. Then purchase a few sweaters, as well.

The key things you'd need for your wardrobe are button down shirts, black blazer, cardigans, khakis, oxfords or loafers, and some nice pair of blue jeans.

You can purchase these items from JCPenny's, Kohl's, Target, Walmart, and Macy's.

If you don't mind wearing used clothes, you could even buy all of this stuff from a thrift store, Salvation Army, Goodwill, or resale shop for under $120. Most thrift stores sell button down shirts for about $4 or less, but that's only if you'd like to try it out.
