If you pay a debtor, must they send you proof of cancelled/paid debt?

To keep it short, I must clear some credit card and bank debt before I am able to take a Navy SEAL challenge contract to get orders to BUD/s. I must prove that each debt was paid in full or in resolve. Do the debtors send me something stating that I've paid off the debt? If so, is it automatically sent or do I have to follow a specified protocol? How should I go about this? Thank you, to all that reply.

Update:

I live in Florida, if that means anything

Just get it in writing first and send them a money order, no check

Not only do they must send you a receipt for "paid in full" but BEFORE you pay them, get it in writing that the amount you are paying will clear you of that debt. Don't ever pay a debt in full unless you have a letter from the creditor stating that if you pay X amount of money, your debt will be paid in full.

You will have to ask for the promissory note first. If you don't have the guts to ask then get any relative/friend, who is good at financial stuff to help you. If you got no one, you might have to go through agencies that help people with their credit problems.
