that takes religion. Steve Weinberg 1999. What do you think of this quote?

I think it is spot on.

Although, I believe the word he used was "evil", not 'bad".

  • I think Voltaire answered this very appropriately when he pointed out:

'Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices'.

I couldn't have put it better myself!

Edit: I see Touchstone has claimed Dawkins endorses rape by quote mining a 45 SECOND snippet of an obviously much longer interview. Why was this necessary? I'm guessing but I'd bet that if the video clip had run beyond 45 seconds Dawkins probably explained that rape is NOT moral. We cannot know because of the ludicrously brief segment used. How honest!

Anyway what does the bible say about rape then?

    Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT:

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What kind of lunatic would make a rape victim marry her attacker? Answer: God.

I think it's short-sighted and overly-simplistic way of looking at life.

The very idea that people are good or bad, like the white-hatted cowboys verses the black-hatted cowboys in some old movie-- is, in my opinion, a childish way to look at the world.

All people are capable of good and bad... all people do both good and bad (of course how much good vs. how much bad varies). Some things people do are both good and bad at the same time-- or the goodness or badness of an act can be debatable.

And there are many things that can come into play, causing a person who otherwise tries to do good to do something not very good to absolutely horrible.

For me, blaming "bad people" on religion is about as ridiculous as blaming it on absense of religion, or on rock music or some other arbitrary thing.

It is stupid. It transfers a moral quality of an act to the intrinsic nature of a person, which the two major religions of the world, Judaism and Christianity, are founded on the OPPOSITE principle.

It also shows that you are a Dawkins fan. That man should be hacked to death with a machete.

Richard Dawkins says that rape is morally arbitrary

    http://subversivethinking.blogspot.com/2011/11/ric...

    The transcript:

Justin Brierley: When you make a value judgement don't you immediately step yourself outside of this evolutionary process and say that the reason this is good is that it's good. And you don't have any way to stand on that statement.

Richard Dawkins: My value judgement itself could come from my evolutionary past.

Justin Brierley: So therefore it's just as random in a sense as any product of evolution.

Richard Dawkins: You could say that, it doesn't in any case, nothing about it makes it more probable that there is anything supernatural.

Justin Brierley: Ultimately, your belief that rape is wrong is as arbitrary as the fact that we've evolved five fingers rather than six. <=========

Richard Dawkins: You could say that, yeah. <=======

But first I would hack you to death. I would.

Religion can push a good man to do bad things, if led astray by those with... agendas, using God to push them along(which happens far too often). Nonetheless, religion is not the only thing that can push a good man to do terrible things, but it seems to be one of the more common methods throughout history, the other being prejudice(which religion often helps with).

I don't believe much in good and bad; arbitrary words used to describe people who agree and conflict with our ideas.

We all have the ability to do harm in the right situations. Christianity deals with sin.
