Get pictures off a broken laptop?

Is there any way for me to get my pictures/other files off of a laptop that will not turn on, if so how would I go about doing this and around how much would it cost? Would it matter if the computer failed because of a virus?

If it restarts and fires up the operating system then neither the hard drive or the operating system has crashed. Other people here and elsewhere have asked similar questions. A shop may be able to fix it affordably but tell them to retrieve the pictures before they reinstall the operating system because that will wipe them off the drive. If the laptop stays on for long enough, whether in one go or several, move or copy all of the picture folders to C. If the worse were to happen and the operating system did crash, you might be able to use the dos prompt to copy the pictures from the folders to an external drive. But my bet is that a shop will be able to fix it.

You can just remove the hard drive and put it into another laptop, save them onto a memory stick or something else then you are done
