How is 17 a child?

There is no evidence that Martin was murdered. The evidence that Zimmerman acted in self-defense within legal guidelines was sufficient to convince the jury.

The prosecution was unable to prove any of the scenarios they proposed.

Both men (and a 17 year old is legally an adult) acted foolishly. On Zimmerman's part, he continued to follow Martin after being advised not to.

On Martin's part, he could have simply fled, he could have called police instead of his girlfriend, or gone to a place of safety (knocked on someone's door and asked for help) or simply continued on to his home.

He did none of these things. He doubled back (so far as we can tell) and confronted Zimmerman...A confrontation that led to his death.
