Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease which is triggered by exposure to gluten in people who have the gene for CD. Gluten intolerance is more akin to a food allergy -- a completely different physiological response to the gluten protein.

To say "celiac intolerance" is a complete misnomer. When a person has celiac disease, they have it. There are no gradations of it, as there are with intolerances where one person may be able to tolerate a small amount of gluten, and another person gets violently ill with exposure to a crumb.

It is confusing, as physicians are only now acknowledging the diagnosis of "gluten intolerance." Expect more definitions and testing to be developed in the coming years.

    Nope.

Officially, it's celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance. However, in the past, celiac disease has ALSO been called gluten intolerance or even gluten allergy. Some doctors still use the terms interchangeably, which can lead to a lot of confusion. The medical community is trying to standardize the terms, as a result.

I personally don't like the word celiac disease. It is gluten intolerance/allerghy period. You do not need a dr or meds, just don't eat gluten. Many people have problem with gluten and don't know it.
