Does everyone have trouble with scifi novels at first?

On a friends recommendation i recently borrowed this book named: A Player Of Games by Ian M Banks a few days ago from a local library. Its a scifi novel, and the main reason I wanted to try reading it was because i wanted to step outside my comfort zone(crime/mystery thrillers) for once but i am having a really hard time picturing scenes depicted in words and understanding some of the Scifi aspects of the book. could somebody please provide me with a solution to this problem?

Thank you in advance for replies

well, there's a gajillion different sci fi authors. it might be just a total coincidence that you picked one that doesn't work for you very well. i'd just search around for different kinds. try some classics maybe, like Isaac Asimov. there are tons out there. it's not a genre i like that much, but every once in a while there is one that gets me. have fun!

Try reading another sci fi book something more entertaining maybe? They do have murder, crime, mystery thrillers in space too ya know. One book so limits your options here, go explore the sci fi in it's full grandeur! They got a ton of them. It was hard for me to read some, but once I got into it I found the writing to be good enough to hold my interest. They can be a nice change.

They are all basically books about things you actually know about, they have just changed the scenery and landscape, you're not in Kansas anymore, they are still mysteries and drama, just the sky is purple and the water is red from iron oxide particles in the land, the sky reflects off a big purple sun that gives off purple light and the planet has 7 moons revolving around it and they are all different colors too! Lovely, it is escapism in it's grandest, but like you I still come home and prefer my thrillers and crimes and stuff like Jeffery Deaver.
