Does everyone have trouble with scifi novels at first?

On a friends recommendation i recently borrowed this book named: A Player Of Games by Ian M Banks a few days ago from a local library. Its a scifi novel, and the main reason I wanted to try reading it was because i wanted to step outside my comfort zone(crime/mystery thrillers) for once but i am having a really hard time picturing scenes depicted in words and understanding some of the Scifi aspects of the book. could somebody please provide me with a solution to this problem?

Thank you in advance for replies

Maybe you should start with something closer to your comfort zone that still qualifies as a scifi novel like Frank Herbert's Dune; The first novel in the series is without doubt one of the greatest novels I've ever read and I'm not even a scifi fan ( I thought rendez vous with Rama was a complete waste of time and it's hailed as a top scifi novel.)
