How do you start counting non-blank cells in Excel?

I have a huge excel sheet and need to be able to count the non blank cells, but not in the entire row...only part of the rows. How do I do that? And where do I put the formula?

You could structure the formula something like:

    =COUNTA(A1:A3)+ COUNTA(A7:A9)+ COUNTA(B3:B5)

Put the formula in whatever cell you wish the total to be returned in.
