How to deal with depression after a heart attack?

I had a stroke four years ago, which limited my abilities. Less than a month ago, I also experienced a major heart attack. My doctors told me that I am very fortunate to be alive. However, my recovery is progressing extremely slowly and I'm beginning to feel helpless and depressed. I know that this is very common after this type of occurrance, and my doctors have given me tips on how to deal with it, but their tips just don't seem to be enough. Any tips from someone who has experienced something similar?

Doctors aren't the best when it comes to addressing emotional issues. Regardless of the situation you are here for a reason. As you know, we have our bad moments. Start small, do what you can at the moment to better yourself. If it's something as simple as taking meds and diet - do it and go from there. I don't know if you have children or had them, but treat yourself like you would a child that you love- relax, do only things you enjoy and eliminate all things that cause you distress (physically and emotionally). I don't want to sound preachy but counting your blessings is a must, take into account what's in your life that is good for you. Try message boards, this one may or may not work: http://psychcentral.com/resources/Depression/Suppo...

Remember, just do what you can. Sometimes life throws us curve balls and feeling helpless serves a purpose to build us up in other ways. The fact that the doctors say you are fortunate to be alive says you're a pretty strong soul. God bless you.

OK..First of all heart attacks can happen at any age, a guy in high school, suddenly dropped to the ground it class, and that was it, at age 15, so do you have heart disease in the family? He was born with a condition he was unaware of. So please believe me, what happened to you, may have been a blessing..you survived and if it did not happen and the surgery was not done, you could have just dropped dead anywhere, but the Doctors FIXED the problem, with proper diet, mild exercise at first, then walking up to an hour daily will keep all your organs in the best working shape possible. Do not dwell on having another heart attack, the chances are way to low. You keep a close relationship with your cardiologist. you will be OK, trust me. And keep your weight to the right one for your built . you will be alright.
