You'll want to have sex starting a couple days before you ovulate through the days you are ovulating. Some people say you should have sex everyday to better your chances, and others say it is best to have sex every other day so your husband's sperm count can get up. My hubby and I conceived both children having sex every good day if possible! As for your period, you can still get pregnant but the chance isn't very high. My advice would be to get a app or calender online, punch in your info about your cycle and ect. The nice thing about the app on your phone is that you can actually record the days that you had sex and ect so you know your days exactly!
