Car won't start unless I dump gas down the carb...?

66 Mustang convertible, with a 289 and 3 speed automatic.

    There are various options for this

    1. Carburrector overhaul

    2. Ignition timing tuning(advancement)

    3. Idling speed adjustment.

    Obviously you have a fuel delivery problem.

    Start by breaking the fuel line loose and give the starter a two second burst.

    If you don't see fuel, the problem is either the a plugged fuel line, fuel filter, or a bad fuel pump.

    If you do not see gas leaking any place--particularly around the accelerator pump housing--the one way valve in the fuel pump is bad and siphoning the gas out of the carburetor.

    you need a carb rebuild or a new carb..sounds like the float is messed up and a good cleaning... no big deal.
