The Legend of Zelda: The Adventure of Link?

So I just finished playing Zelda 1 (it was very, very hard. The hardest Zelda game I've played, mainly because you have to blow any random space to get something, and getting to the dungeons is hard.)

So I got Zelda 2, and I don't understand anything.

You just start in some palace with Zelda sleeping. I read that there is this leveling system, how does it work? And how do I use magic? How do I learn spells? This game is so different than the traditional Zelda games like Oot, TP, WW, and the game boy ones.

And also, if I lose the 3 lifes, from where will I start? Thank you

Yeah...Zelda II is the bane of many a fan's existence...

Enemies: As you walk around Hyrule Field and in the dungeons themselves you encounter enemies. In the field, they are the big black shadows that swarm around you and you touch one to initiate a battle screen. Defeat the enemies on this side scrolling screen in order to earn XP. Once you have enough XP, you can level up your sword, life or magic. Enemies will only appear when you are on the grassy areas (just like in OoT at night!). Be careful though as when some enemies touch you, they minus XP that you have gained and it is possible to go back to zero if you are not careful.

Magic can only be used once you have learned spells from the wise men in the village. From the start screen, go all the way to the right, around the rock and down until you see a village symbol. Head towards it and enter this town. As you walk through the town (and any town in the future), there are some people you'll want to talk to. Mainly old women (who heal your magic) and younger women. The younger women invite you inside and heal your health. When you locate the village wise man, he is who you learn spells from. The more you progress in the game, the harder the spells become to learn as you may be required to trade an item to get it. Not all spells are necessary for game completion but they are mighty useful.

If you lose all three of your lives, you will start back inside the temple were Zelda is sleeping. If you have by some miracle made it to the Great Palace, if you die you will start outside the Palace.

    EDIT:

If you are still confused, check out chapter 1 of this video walkthrough ( http://www.zeldadungeon.net/Zelda02-the-adventure-... ) as Mases, the person playing the video, is really good at explaining this game and the mechanics in the opening of chapter 1.
