Unless you have malware, in which case some sort of antivirus should (but might not) help, the only options are:

*Looking at what is running. Do you have Skype, your web browser with 50 tabs open and a game running? Close some stuff. Do one thing at a time. Unless your computer is very, very old, it should be able to handle a single/a few applications well. Games, perhaps not, but close anything but that and it will run at least a little bit better.

*Upgrading. Unless you play video games, RAM is the affordable and effective option. What's important to remember is that more RAM will not help unless your computer is struggling with what you have - if you have 12 GB RAM, then you will have to work hard to fill that, so more will do nothing for you. If you have 2 GB RAM, it will fill up pretty fast, so more will help you.

If you have enough RAM, you can choose to upgrade your CPU - or processor, as it's also called - but at that point we get into some rather complicated tinkering. There's also a possibility that your motherboard (basically the main, big board in your computer that makes all other parts interact with each other) is not compatible to newer CPUs.

If you play games a graphics card is important. Remember, though, that if your CPU is old, a graphics card may not help all that much by itself. These are somewhat easy to switch out by yourself, but if you're asking this question on the internet I don't think you can handle that - however, I believe you can go to some computer store (do those still exist?) and pay for someone to switch it. The price for the help can be a little rough considering it's pretty easy, but if you don't know how to do it, well, you're out of luck.

So, if you upgrade, go RAM, or a whole new PC.
