How do I adjust air pressure on a air compressor for paint spray gun.?

How do I adjust air pressure on a Porter Cable C3151 TYPE 1 4.5 Gallon Air Compressor to 40 psi (for paint sprayer) with adjustment knob without having the compressor run all day long? When I try to adjust the pressure the motor will kick on and attempt to build up pressure back to 140 psi. Do I need an inline pressure regulator or am I just doing something wrong. The max inlet pressure on my Kobalt small gravity feed spray gun states 43psi max inlet.

There should be an adjustable pressure regulator on the compressor.Go tto yahoo or google search and type in Porter cable c3151 type 1 4.5 gallon compressor and they will have a diagram showing you where it is.There is a manifold and then the regulator.

yes, an in line pressure regulator will knock it down at the point of use - you will want to keep the tank pressure high to maintain the cfms needed so your pressure doesn't drop off when spraying - the filter the other poster mentioned is a great tip for spray painting - I am surprised that compressor doesn't have 2 regulators to begin with, one for the tank pressure and one for line pressure but all the images just show the one

You should add a separate regulator as well as a moisture/oil filter if you don't want contaminates in your paint film.
