Why does this comment piss people off?

I carry a small blade which is only about 3 inches long that I use for opening boxes when needed. As it is attached to my keys I carry it everywhere. I have been asked what I would do in a grapple situation which I reply that I would stab whoever took me to the ground until they let me go. I do what I can to avoid any conflicts so would probably never find myself in that situation. Many people have told me that it is a cheap way out and act as if I have offended them in some way. Can someone give me a rational answer to why this is offensive? REMEMBER that I do all I can to avoid this situation.

Update:

@ Solavei

That if I get in a grappling situation I would just stab until they let go

Update 2:

@ Mistermr

I work in Universities and Colleges and sometimes need to open boxes of books sent to me to review, sometimes I need to remove the plastic bands around the boxes that they send bulk paper in. I think everyone in Universities carries a small knife

Update 3:

sorry the above comment was for Mr. Lee

They find it offensive because it is too real. It goes against their sports fighting mentality. They have taken away the reality that you never know what the person has in a real fight. The reality of self defense is to end the threat quickly by any means.

I often have people ask me questions like what would you do if. When I say I will shoot them they all have comments like, why? You know all of that karate kung fu stuff. I reply I have my CCW and I am normally carrying. It is not about fighting. It is about my safety and self reservation. It would be no different if someone was trying to attack me and I wasn't armed and I see a brick. I'm going to use the brick. Hit them hard with the brick and the threat has ended. Gut them with the knife, the threat has ended. Put 2 in the chest and the threat has ended.

Some may say I don't value life. I beg to differ. I value all life. But I value my life and the lives of my loved ones that I provide for even more than the person that attempts to attack me that doesn't value their own life.

    Edit:

A person is delusional if they believe they see every fight as they are. That is it just a gentleman's quarrel. A gentleman's quarrel used to end in duels. The end result that at least one of the gentleman was killed or critically injured. It is no longer legal to do this, but in society today you never know the intent of the other person. Many have no problem taking your life. To many it is a badge of honor. They don't shake hands and hug after get beat up by you. They get a gun and shoot to kill.

    1. A blade is not always legal. You could well get into prison.

    2. What if there are more than one attackers. Can you grab your blade in time, before one grabs and the other strikes.

    3. What if they have blades too. Or bigger and better.....guns?

Blade is a common ambush weapon for offense. Its defense value is pretty limited in terms of law and most things. It's limited because that's what it is. A close quarter tool. In any defensive scenarios, try to grab distance weapons to create distance, and time for reactions.

Korkoro gave a good answer. Successful knife attacks are sneaky. They run up to you and it's all over. No one would go all and try to struggle with a knife. Even soldiers stab people behind them.

For my training. The knife is purely offensive. You can learn how to defend one, but using them for defense is pretty limited. A stab wound depends on where you attack, if you strike the aorta anywhere they might let go. If you stab in the wrong places......There are some really tough attackers and victims who survived multiple stab wounds. Heck, there are even rumours that eskrimadors fought off an American after he emptied his pistol into him. Knife is a killing too, apart from that, its stopping capabilities will be limited.

I'd recommend canes, or other tools. Impact weapons aren't that bad. Plus you don't get people complaining you're some kind of crazy dude if you carry a walking stick, instead of a knife everywhere.

By the way why do you assume they're just going to take you to the ground? What makes you think, they can't land a few punch, then slam you onto broken glasses or a sharp spike? Some untrained fighters will just take you down. But dirty ones are out there.

Added: Also, what makes you think they won't take you down face first. A lot of people in my area do that behind someone's back, grab both leg and push them down with running speed. The immediately hit the neck or dance on top of someone? Can your arms stab in the reverse way?

I've got nothing against those dirty tricks but my training tells me to avoid using offensive close quarter tools over impact defensive tools.

Added: In fact you need to be much more worried about someone who hits people. A large amount of grappling like criminals do it for rape. So this situation is not likely to happen.

the problem with stabbing a person like that is in court in may no longer be considered self defense.

i might still use the knife but keep it closed and strike with it.

im all for having no rules in self defense, but you need to understand the difference between self defense and assault. its a fine line and very easy to cross. unless you can spend over 300k on a lawyer team like zimmermen.

btw the length of the blade doesn't matter what matters in most states now a days is if the blade locks or doesn't lock.

i suggest if your uncomfortable with grappling or ground work you should work on your close range strikes. ie the inch strike. used correctly it it give you the edge. learn some basic grappling then work on ground fighting

Most people cannot fathom the idea that some people don't have twisted minds.

I have a nice little knife I use for whatever it comes in handy for, but I don't carry it simply because I do not like having anything on my person... I don't have jewelry of any kind. I have three watches that I don't even wear. Nothing hanging from me.

What most people don't realize is that the knife should be the least of their worries.

I rely on my surroundings to provide help.

My answer resembles KW's in ways. Where I live scrapping is just a part of life. So if two guys throw down, it is no big deal.

On the flip side you said you avoid this. So if some guy picks a fight with you and you try to get out of it and the tackles you and you stab him, there's a good chance I'm on your side.

Now I do question the ability to pull a knife out of your pocket while a guy is on top of you when trying to knock your teeth out.

the offensive part is your lack of respect for grappling. you cant always just stab people even if you have a knife. a experienced grappler might take it of of you. or you might neck broken or your skull cracked from different judo throws or a suplex

No one believes that someone carries a knife to open boxes. They know it is carried to be used in a fight. This makes folks nervous/anxious/angry.

I think there are people out there who believe that if they attack someone, that person is obliged to "fight fair". It is a deadly and stupid mind-set. You start a fight in the street you better be prepared to kill or be killed.

Kids shouldn't be holding knives ok? It's dangerous. Running with scissors is dangerous too!
