Do beavers live at 12,000 ft of elevation?
I was recently at a lake in the Rocky Mountains and we saw to things swimming in the lake. They looked like beavers but I could never get close enough to get a real good look. There was a a little head sticking out of the water and then a body underswater behind it. Definitely not a snake. I didn't see any beaver damns, but one did smack the water and then go underwater for about 5 seconds. Unfortunately I wasn't looking at that exact moment so I could see if it was a tail that made the splash or what. I'm just curious as to what they might have been because I would have expected to see beavers at that high of elevation.

What you need to do is to Google "Distribution Map of ...." and look at where that species is found.
Other choices are otter, perhaps mink, as well as Beaver.

I have seen many beavers at our local river. I do not live in an elevated area. In fact, many people who are not accustomed to our little town, but come for a visit, refer to us as living in a hollow, although our roads and country side give one a feeling of being in the mountains. It's a beautiful place and so are its people! We have an abundance of wildlife!
