How can I publish my short story to make money?
I wrote a short story about an lonely, old sailor who rents his property out to a college student for a ridiculously low price on the condition that once a month when he comes to collect the rent, he'll sit and talk to him for a few hours and listen to his stories. I think it's pretty good and I'm wondering how I can publish it and make some money. I'm obviously not looking to make thousands of dollars or anything but just like 50 or 100 bucks would be sort of cool, but I'm pretty new to this whole literacy thing and I'm wondering how people make money off of short stories
Thanks for your guys advice, but I just wanted to clarify, I'm not trying to make a living as a writer or anything. I haven't written anything since college besides this. I have a full time job that's my primary source of income, I just had this idea for a story, and I wrote it in about a week and I thought it would be cool to see if I could have it published and make a few bucks on the side. Thanks!

Find the publisher that wants it and then follow the submission guidelines.

Well, based on the wording of your details, I will go out on a limb and say that you should probably have someone proofread it to be sure that it is polished and free of grammatical, word and spelling errors. Then put it away for awhile and come back to it with fresh eyes to see if it is really as full of potential as you feel it is now. Is there anything you would change? Did you capture the angle of the story you were trying to? Writing is like newspaper reporting. There is a story in everything, The trick is knowing exactly what "the" story is and it may not be something of face value. Once you've done that then come back and have an idea of the forum you want your story to be released in i.e. just in a magazine, or through a major publisher, etc.

I think some magazines buy short stories. Look up magazines that go with themes similar to your story - if any of them mention that they're looking for stories, try sending yours in.

while reading a book, you're stimulating the human brain. You better your literacy and reading skills so you along the way, are more literate. Despite having today's modern technology, you nevertheless still need to be able to read.
While you're watching t.v. can be good fun, it isn't doing anything to your brain.

If you want money, you would do much better to get a job. Writing for money isn't a stable or even easy thing to do. There are a finite amount of paying jobs out there and you are competing with writers who know how to research where to submit stories.
